Pajakkakoski

Right near the town center lies the beautiful Pajakka recreational area. The Pajakka River is where Kuhmo’s vast lake and river systems converge, flowing through three rapids—Pajakkakoski, Akonkoski, and Saarikoski—on their way toward Lake Ontojärvi. Pajakkakoski is the largest freely flowing rapid in Kainuu by volume, stretching about 450 meters. In the late ninetheenth century, tar boats were rowed along this very route toward Oulu.

Pajakka is an important migratory fish river and a popular fishing destination, designated a local angling site in 2017. More information is available at Kalallakainuussa.fi.

The rapids can be admired up close, as a constructed pathway runs right alongside them, starting next to the bridge. This path is part of the so-called Rantaraitti trail, which begins at the Kuhmo Arts Centre by Lake Lammasjärvi and meanders through lakeside scenery toward Pajakkakoski. Along the way, visitors can also explore cultural landmarks like the city library, Tuupala Museum, and the Chamber Music Centre.

You can explore the full Rantaraitti trail via the provided link.

For those wanting to grill sausages, the nearest campfire spot is located right by the rapids. A lakeside kota (Lapp hut) is available for reservation via the Kuksas service station. From the bridge, there’s also a trail leading to an open campfire site about 2 km away. This site is also accessible by car, making it easy to reach.

Located on the riverbank is the Kuhmo City Library, and across the rapids stands the former Ikola vicarage.

Ikola Café is open during the summer of 2023, offering visitors the chance to explore the old vicarage, built in 1811—one of the oldest buildings in Kuhmo. The vicarage has been renovated over the years, and a path allows visitors to walk around the surrounding grounds.
