Jongun river kayaking route

Jongunjoki river– Wilderness River Adventure for Paddlers (approx. 70–120 km)

Jongunjoki river is a paddler’s dream: a wilderness river left in near-natural condition since log driving ended. It features a thrilling mix of rapids and calm stretches, with short lake sections and beautiful, remote surroundings.

The full Jongunjoki canoe route runs nearly 70 km, beginning at Jonkerinjärvi lake in Kuhmo and flowing into the Lieksanjoki river. It drops 80 meters in elevation over its course and is known for its wild, scenic, and fast-flowing waters. Most of the riverbanks are uninhabited, offering peaceful wilderness, with only a few maintained rest areas, lean-tos, and two wilderness huts. The first part of the route is the most rapid-filled, with 35 of the total 50 rapids and fast currents found between Jonkeri and Aittokoski. Many of the rapids are easily runnable, though a few should be scouted beforehand.

In low water, the upper rapids can be rocky, but the route is generally navigable in most water levels, especially from Teljo or Aittokoski onward.

For a longer adventure, you can continue the route all the way to Pankajärvi lake via Lieksanjoki river, extending the journey to nearly 120 km.
