Getting to Arctic Lakeland Finland is about to become significantly easier for international travellers. Discover Airlines will launch a new direct route between Frankfurt and Kajaani for the Winter 2027–2028 season.
The new service will operate once a week on Fridays from 17 December 2027 to 24 March 2028. The route connects Arctic Lakeland directly with Frankfurt, one of Europe’s largest international aviation hubs. Thanks to Lufthansa Group’s extensive route network, travelling to Kuhmo will become much more convenient not only from Germany, but also from across Europe, North America and Asia.
Germany is already Arctic Lakelands’s most important international source market, and the new connection will make the region’s winter experiences more accessible than ever.
One flight closer to the forest and authentic culture
In Kuhmo, visitors discover the quieter side of Arctic Lakeland. A winter day can begin on a peaceful forest trail, continue with unforgettable nature experiences, and end with local flavours or cultural events. The journey can easily be combined with other destinations across Kainuu, making the region an excellent choice for a longer itinerary.
The new direct connection from Frankfurt also creates new opportunities for international tour operators to develop travel packages that combine nature, culture and authentic local experiences.
Better accessibility benefits the whole region
The new route is the result of long-term collaboration carried out through the Arctic Lakeland Charter project together with tourism operators across Kainuu region. During negotiations, Discover Airlines was introduced to the region’s diverse tourism offering, with the shared goal of strengthening Arctic Lakeland’s position as an international travel destination.
The next step is to develop and package new travel experiences for the Winter 2027–2028 season in cooperation with local tourism businesses and international tour operators.

- Kajaani (KAJ) → Frankfurt (FRA): 15:40–17:35
Ticket sales will begin in December 2026.
