Jämäs paddling route 12 km
The Jämäslahthi Paddling Route (Kuhmo, Finland)
The route starting from Maakunnanranta in the center of Kuhmo runs through Pajakkakoski, Akonkoski, Pyssyniva, and Saarikoski, leading to the eastern end of Lake Ontojärvi in Jämäslahthi.
The Jämäslahthi paddling route offers gentle rapids, calm currents, and a glimpse of the eastern waters of Lake Ontojärvi. The Pajakkajoki River, which begins in central Kuhmo, is a fast-flowing stream with calmer stretches between the rapids.
This route is not suitable for beginners, as it includes rapids. However, the rapids are relatively easy, with fairly straightforward lines. The difficulty may vary depending on water levels. Pajakkakoski and Akonkoski rapids are classified as class I–II in terms of difficulty.
Official rest stops:
-
Lean-to shelter at the calm water section of Pajakkakoski
-
Rest stops between Akonkoski and Saarikoski — located mid-rapid on the southern shore (difficult to access by kayak or canoe)
Otherwise, landing is permitted under Everyman’s Rights. However, note that many of the shores along the route are inhabited.
Both the starting and ending points of the route are easily accessible by car.
