Kuhmo covers an area of 547,700 hectares, of which 250,000 hectares are designated for small game hunting (grouse, waterfowl, hare, small predators, and beaver) on state lands. The area is divided into three different hunting zones: East Kuhmo, West Kuhmo, and South Kuhmo. You can purchase a hunting license through the eräluvat.fi service. Local residents have the right to hunt for free on state lands within their own municipality.

Hunting with a Finnish Spitz

For moose hunting, hunting groups must apply for a moose hunting area each year in January. After the group has received the area permit, they must still apply for a hunting permit from the Finnish Wildlife Agency (Suomen Riistakeskus).

Hunting bear, wolf, lynx, and wolverine requires a special permit issued by the Finnish Wildlife Agency.
