Harakkasaari (island)

Harakkasaari, situated near the urban area of Kuhmo on Lake Lammasjärvi, offers excellent opportunities for various nature-based recreational activities throughout the year. Not only is Harakkasaari a nature reserve and recreational spot, but it’s also a distinctive attraction within Kuhmo’s natural landscapes. Over time, the ridges of the island have attracted hikers, while its sandy beaches have invited summer day outings.

The island becomes interesting due to the fact that during high water levels, it genuinely becomes an island, but during low water levels, the isthmus between the island and the mainland rises above the water’s surface. Along the way, one might have to wade through, adding a fun challenge. However, after that, the trail ascends to a magnificent isthmus offering splendid views on both sides. The nature consists of rugged pine forest, where one can encounter old, bark-peeled pine trees.

The island features a beautiful sandy beach, a fireplace, a shelter, and a toilet. During winter, ski tracks and an ice road pass near the island.

You can reach Harakkasaari by boat or by following the trail that starts from the right side of the Kalevala Hotel.
