Kuhmo offers peaceful and beautiful nature destinations for all tastes. Here are a few recommendations:

Korpitaival (52 km)

Korpitaival is a summer hiking route that takes you into the heart of Kuhmo’s wilderness. It runs from the Kokkamo–Kylmäjärvi area to the Elimyssalo Nature Reserve, and further on to the Iso-Palonen–Maariansärkkä Nature Reserve. Iso-Palonen–Maariansärkkä Nature Reserve (approx. 21 km of trails)


Located in eastern Kuhmo, this area is a combination of small lakes, numerous ponds, pine heaths, and ridges – or särkkä, as they are called in Kainuu. Sininen polku (The blue trail, approx. 16 km of trails)


Sininen polku is named after the path that runs through it. The name is fitting: blue lakes and ponds glimmer on both sides of the charming ridge landscape. The easy-to-walk trails mostly wind through dry pine forests, but occasionally weave into spruce-dominated mixed forests and wetlands. Read more: Sininen polku / The blue trail

Hepokankaan reitti, Hepokangas trail (12km)

Starting from the town centre, this route can be enjoyed either by mountain bike or on foot. The trail consists of natural paths, with boardwalks over wet sections and gravel paths in other places. Parts of the route also follow a fitness trail and roads. Read more: Hepokangas trail

Kieverrysjärvet (noin 5km)

The Kieverrysjärvet area, with its almost untouched ridge lakes, mires, and old-growth forests, invites you on a day trip into stunning wilderness scenery near Finland’s eastern border.
