Kuhmo’s local beaches invite you to swim, play, and enjoy the summer sun. Whether you’re planning an early morning dip or a full day by the water, there’s room for everyone – from little water lovers to sunseekers looking for peace and quiet.
Swimming Beaches in Kuhmo
In Kuhmo, you’re surrounded by waterways.
This means that even from the very center of Kuhmo, it’s easy to take a refreshing dip in clean, fresh water.
Ruukinranta, maintained by the City of Kuhmo, is located right in the town center, behind the Kuhmo Arts Centre (Kuhmo-talo). Access to the parking area is from Kainuuntie. The beach is well-suited even for small children. During the summer, changing rooms are freely available for visitors.
Winter Swimming at Ruukinranta
The Ruukinranta beach is also used for ice swimming during the winter months. The city maintains the ice hole to ensure it remains safe and accessible.
If you wish to go winter swimming, you can purchase a personal key that gives you access to the changing rooms during the winter season. The key is available for purchase from the City Hall or via the online store.
Natural Swimming Beaches
Roukonpuro Beach is one of the best natural swimming spots in Kuhmo. It offers hundreds of meters of sandy shoreline, making it an excellent place for families with children. The beach is located west of Kuhmo (address: Pohjoispuolentie 1900; from there, turn onto Roukonpurontie to the left). There are no services or facilities in the area.
At the Kalevala Hotel beach, there is a sandy beach open for public use. Dogs are also allowed on this beach. After some time at the beach, you can enjoy refreshments on the hotel’s terrace.
Lentua has beautiful sandy beaches located on islands. At Isohiekkaniemi beach, there is a lovely sandy shore accessible without a boat. To get there, drive along Lentiirantie (about 14 km), after Varajoki turn left onto Torvenlahdentie. At the end of the road, a small winding path leads right down to the beach.
Other Places
Pajakka Recreation Pier is located near Pajakkakoski (Kirkkotie 22). Note that it is not suitable for small children.
Uitto Pier can be found at Ruukintie 11, just behind Ruukinranta.
