Elimyssalo
The Elimyssalo Nature Reserve showcases the very best of Kainuu’s forest landscapes. It is a mosaic of diverse wetlands, beard lichen-draped spruce mires, lush streamside groves, and small lakes and ponds.
Located near the eastern border, Elimyssalo is a central part of the Friendship Park, which consists of five separate nature reserves, mostly within the city limits of Kuhmo. There are several trail options of varying lengths within Elimyssalo, totaling 24 kilometers of hiking routes. The trails are relatively easy to walk and clearly marked, guiding hikers through the reserve’s varied terrain of wetlands and dry ridges. Boardwalks are in place across the wetter sections.
Along the trails, visitors will encounter two old wilderness farms: Levävaara and Latvavaara. In summer, shepherds live at Levävaara, where sheep graze in fenced pastures in the yard. The sheep are friendly and may be petted, but the buildings are not open to the public.
