Kalliojoen rapids

Introduction

“Before log driving clearings, the Kalliojoki River was the most important spawning area for the lake-dwelling trout of Lake Lentua. Later, the rapids along the route have been restored to make them more favorable for salmonids. The most commonly targeted catch in the rapids is grayling, but trout can also be found in moderate numbers. In addition, anglers occasionally catch bright-sided lake trout as surprise catches.”

The Kalliojoki waterway has a total of 27 rapids, most of which are easily accessible. The sites are suitable for longer fishing treks, but there are also easily reachable spots worth trying, such as Kattilakoski, Nurronkoski, and Kalastonkoski. The rapids are beautiful and remain in a natural state. The area is not stocked with catch-sized trout or grayling; instead, the stocking is done using juvenile fish.

The main fish species in the area are perch, grayling, pike, whitefish, and trout. The rapids offer a diverse fishing experience, providing both interest and challenge even for experienced anglers. In some places, even a skilled angler may be tested — you might see fish rising on the surface, but just out of reach. Wading gear is recommended for moving along the rapids, but actual wading into the rapids should be avoided, as grayling in particular are very shy.
