Syväjärvi, Rainbow trout fishing
Introduction
Syväjärvi, located in Kuhmo, is a recreational and fishing destination maintained by Metsähallitus, about 20 kilometers from the town center. This forest lake has two separate basins and is characterized by its clear water, with both ends deep and steeply sloping.
The landscape is dominated by dry pine heaths and the Syväjärvensärkkä ridge rising to the north of the lake. A roughly 6-kilometer easy-to-walk shoreline trail circles the lake, with several campfire sites along the way. Fishing at Syväjärvi is easily accessible from the shores. There are casting piers built for anglers, as well as spots that have naturally flattened over time, making them ideal for fishing. You can also fish from a rental boat or bring your own kayak, packraft, or float tube. This gives a new perspective on fishing and allows you to cover a wider area.
When fishing, waterproof shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended, although regular sneakers can also be sufficient. The most common fishing methods at Syväjärvi are spin fishing and bait fishing, but fly fishing is also possible. Wading gear is not needed, as fishing is done from the shore or from a boat. In winter, Syväjärvi offers a wonderful setting for ice fishing.
Rainbow trout, stocked at catchable size, provide fishing excitement year-round. You can also catch naturally occurring perch and pike. Syväjärvi is an excellent destination for families and groups, combining fishing and outdoor recreation. Large parking areas and lakeside cottage facilities with saunas make it suitable even for bigger groups. There are easy casting spots for children, where they can safely try fishing under adult supervision.
Firewood for the lean-tos can be found at the boat shore and next to the large kota (hut). Please take only the amount of firewood you need for your campfire.
The area also offers accessible fishing opportunities; however, not all spots are fully accessible.
