Vuonteenkoski Introduction

Located in Nivankylä, Vuonteenkoski is the “little sister” of Kaarneenkoski. The rapid looks like a narrow chute, but appearances are deceiving in this case. The rapid is a playground for trout and grayling. It is especially well-suited for streamer fishing due to the strong current. However, it’s good to remember that trout often go for smaller food, so small flies are worth trying. For grayling fishing, a small caddisfly or larva imitation works best. Olive green and dark-colored (black hue) flies appeal to the fish in this rapid.

You can also fish at the site with a spinning rod. The upper and lower pool areas are very fish-rich, and you can also try the rapid itself with a spinner or a small lure. Good results have been achieved with Mepps 3 and 2 spinners (red/gold and red/copper), Abu Garcia Droppen 6 g, Reflex Arctic 7 g, and Bete Lotto lures in red and “parrot” colors, around 9 g. The absolute favorite for Vuonteenkoski is the “Vapaalla Jalalla Lotto”, whose colors are especially attractive to the fish in this rapid. In the pool areas, you can try larger spinners and lures. Near the shelter by the shore, the bottom is rockier, so it’s recommended to use lighter spinners or lures there.

Fishing at Vuonteenkoski is only allowed from the mill side, but that doesn’t matter, as the most fish-rich rock holes are located on that side. You should equip yourself with wading gear, as reaching the best casting spots requires crossing the mill stream. However, do not wade into the rapid, as you will be standing directly above the fish. There are also deep holes among rocks on the shore, so wading is not safe.

Driving Directions

From the center of Kuhmo, drive towards Hyryntie / Route 900 for approximately 3.5 km, then turn right onto Kekkostie / Route 9070 and drive 25.5 km. Turn right onto Nivantie and continue for 5.8 km. Turn right onto Halkoahontie and drive 1.7 km. Turn left and continue 1.6 km, then turn right and drive 500 meters. You will arrive at the turning area on the mill side of Vuonteenkoski.
