Lake fishing in Kuhmo
Lake fishing in Kuhmo is an unforgettable experience. There are several lake fishing destinations to choose from, the most popular being Lentua, Ontonen, Kellojärvi, Lammasjärvi, and Iivantiira.
Kuhmo’s vast and diverse waterways offer anglers an endless variety of waters to explore. In addition to its numerous rapids and river fishing sites, Kuhmo is home to around 1,500 lakes where trolling enthusiasts and lure anglers can try their luck. The largest and best-known lakes include Lentua, Ontojärvi, Iivantiira–Juttua, Lammasjärvi, Kellojärvi, Änätti, and Lentiira.
These wilderness lakes, renowned for their natural beauty, are rarely crowded with boats, leaving plenty of productive fishing spots to discover. Fish stocks are abundant, and the waters are clean, pristine, and in excellent condition. The most common catches for lure anglers in Kuhmo’s lakes are northern pike, perch, and pike-perch (zander), all of which can grow to impressive trophy sizes. In some waters, anglers may even hook a wild Kainuu lake trout. In addition to stocking programs in rapids and rivers, fish are also regularly stocked in certain lakes.
Trolling
Lure Fishing
Jig fishing is a versatile and highly effective way to target fish throughout the open-water season, although it is at its best in autumn when perch gather into large schools. A jig allows anglers to thoroughly work deep holes and the edges of underwater reefs with far greater precision than trolling. Soft plastic worm and baitfish imitations are most commonly used to target perch and zander, although pike will readily strike when given the opportunity. Since perch and zander often occupy the same areas, a good way to explore a new fishing spot is with a brown-toned jig of around three inches in length, which appeals to both species.
During the summer months, perch can also be found in shallower water, along the edges of reed beds and water lily stands, as well as around submerged reefs. The most effective lures are often spinners, small crankbaits, and lightly weighted jigs.
Kuhmo’s lakes are generally oligotrophic, with relatively few long stretches of reed-lined shoreline. However, when a sheltered, vegetated bay is found, it can be a truly outstanding pike fishing spot, particularly in late spring and early summer after spawning. Smaller pike remain among the vegetation throughout the summer, while larger specimens tend to move into deeper, more oxygen-rich waters as temperatures rise.
Lure fishing requires only the national fisheries management fee. Traditional rod-and-line fishing and ice fishing, however, are permitted under Finland’s public access rights and can be enjoyed free of charge without any permit fees.
